Is it beneficial to be angry?

Simmered Takana

I wrote about pickled takana before, and when I told my senior at work about it, he made me Simmered Takana like the one in the picture. I was very happy. This kind of stew is a very everyday meal in Japan. I think that most people stew meat and vegetables, but in Japan, historically, meat has been fish or poultry. In this stew, chikuwa is stewed. It is a fish product. This kind of simple food is gentle on the stomach and body, and it also calms the mind.

I feel like I'm being chased by life these days. I really don't have any free time. I go to work early in the morning, so even if I get home earlier than in my previous job, the amount of time I can devote to life doesn't change that much. Since it is still a trial period, the required time is 6 hours, but in most cases it is equivalent to full-time work hours. Still, the relief is that I enjoy my work. It's a job where I can do creative things, and I'm constantly trying new things, so I feel relaxed.

However, I am having a hard time figuring out how to allocate the remaining time between my life and leisure. I can't enjoy chatting with my language exchange friends as much as I used to, and I can't update my blog as often as I used to. But I can't cut down on my sleep. Having too many hobbies is also a problem. I'm thinking about dividing them up by day of the week.

Since I grew up separated from my father, I have a hard time being scolded, especially by adult men, or even being pressured even if I'm not scolded. That's why I try not to get angry when raising my children or at work.

In the first place, if you get angry emotionally, the person you scolded will only remember that you were scolded, and the important points and instructions on how to improve will not be conveyed. That's not educational at all, and it's rather inefficient and irrational.

And in the end, I think that the angry person is just unable to control their own emotions. I think that this is essentially a problem with the angry person himself. It is a flaw that should be criticized by others. After all, I don't think getting angry has any effect.

In fact, I almost never get angry at my daughters. But that doesn't mean I'm kind. My eldest daughter seems to have noticed, saying, "Daddy won't let me get away with it." I calmly talk to her and point out her hidden true feelings, so all her maneuvers seem to be pointless.

But in the end, I think that's important. If you don't lie about the facts and face the real problem properly, you'll end up blaming others or the environment for a long time. Moreover, if you separate the problem from yourself in this way, you don't have to think. In other words, you don't develop your ability to think.

That's why I also want to spend my leisure time wisely without running away from the fact that I only have a limited amount of time in my life. Did it come together pretty well? (laughs)

Because if you don't eat, you'll die.

Rice mixed with pickled turnip leaves

Red turnip before cooking

I think I've written before that I talk a lot about food on my blog. Similarly, there are many photos of food.

That's why I've been writing about complicated topics for a while now. It may be fun for those who are interested, but since interests vary from person to person, I was thinking about writing about something different.

Originally, I started this blog to write down common topics about Japan that I talk about with my language exchange friends, so that they can read it anytime and introduce it to their friends, so it's fine to write about everyday life.

However, if possible, something Japanese-like would be good. So, this is a story about turnips.

Ehime Prefecture, where I live, is famous for mandarin oranges, but there are also several other agricultural products that are famous as well. Did you know that one of them is a turnip called "Iyohikabu"? My great-grandmother was from Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, and she often ate pickled red turnips on New Year's Day.

I didn't like small things very much, but as I became an adult, it became one of my favorite foods. However, there are few places that sell Iyohikabu pickles, and they are expensive. When it comes to pickled red turnips in Japan, Hida Takayama's red turnips are famous, but in Hida Takayama's case they are old pickles that are pickled in salt and fermented with lactic acid. Iyohikabu pickles are pickled in vinegar, and the flavor of citrus fruits such as orange is added.

Even if it's just a regular turnip, I like pickled turnips, so every winter I look around at the farm-fresh market to see if there are any turnips on sale at a reasonable price. The other day, I got some red turnips at a reasonable price, so I decided to pickle them in vinegar.

The reason it's cheap is because it's small and misshapen, but it's not a problem for me to use it myself. I cut the turnip stem, peeled it, cut it, and pickled it in vinegar. I gave up on the citrus juice because I couldn't find a suitable variety.

I was thinking as I looked at the cut turnip stem. I feel like it's a waste. So I chopped it up, washed it, boiled it, and salted it. If you mix this with rice, it becomes nahan. It's delicious, isn't it? My eldest daughter enjoyed it. It's also delicious when made into onigiri.

I thought it would be a waste to throw away the peels, so I tried drying them, thinking that if daikon radish skin can be made into kiriboshi daikon, then turnip skin could be made as well. I left this in Osaka, so I don't know how it will turn out yet.

In this way, I used up everything without throwing anything away.

I think I'll be able to eat the turnip pickles from the day after tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to it.

If you think about it, humans die if they don't eat, so we usually eat three times a day. Eating is something that's so familiar to us, and no matter how busy we are, we eat. It can't be helped that busy working adults tend to focus on food.

There are many people who are interested in the topic of Japanese food, so I think it's good. It's good, isn't it?

Humans are also part of the unreasonable nature

My daughters playing at the science and technology museum

I went to the hospital last week, so I went back to Osaka on Thursday. That said, I didn't arrive in Osaka until 3am on Friday.

Talking with my doctor is a precious time for me, like having a Zen dialogue with the monk at the temple where I train. In fact, rather than talking about specific symptoms and how to deal with them, we often talk about how to think about life and how to live it.

This time, my doctor talked about how he found his own "reason to live." He wrote it down and gave it to me. In the story, he talked about how to live in a hopeless situation. An example of a hopeless environment was being imprisoned in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Then he talked about the psychiatrist Viktor Frankl.

Apparently, at first, Frankl prayed to God for salvation in Auschwitz. However, he changed his mind. He came to think that this was God testing him to see how he would live to the end, even in a hopeless situation. As a result, he was able to leave Auschwitz alive through various miracles that he did not realize at the time.

My doctor thought that since the world is a place of training, it is natural for things to be unreasonable. He also thought that in today's affluent world, people are drowning in various desires and becoming dependent on various substances and actions. Now, it is important to know how to deal with the desires that are the objects of dependence. That is the purpose of living one's life.

As I listened to what my doctor said, I sympathized and thought. The reason I left my previous job (a civil servant) was because I was disgusted by the pathology of an organization that continues to cover up reality without facing it. I feel that it was an organization of people who were dependent on escapism, so to speak. So, if you ask me if other organizations are like that, I'm sure that is not the case. Society runs on, at least to a certain extent, by covering up troublesome things. When I thought about why there are so many unreasonable and troublesome organizations, I realized that humans themselves are a part of nature, and that the actions of humans, who are part of nature, are the workings of nature, and that nature is unreasonable to begin with.

Nature is definitely unreasonable. Nature causes disasters, destroys lives, and takes lives without regard for our convenience. It's the same with animals. If you preach to a wild bear about the noble human idea of respecting life, the bear will probably attack you. Surrounded by artificial things and dominated by a sense of omnipotence brought about by science, we have probably just forgotten this.

Thinking about it like that, I felt a lot lighter. After all, humans, who are merely a part of nature, could never create something like the utopia imagined by gods and Buddhas. There's no point in expecting it.

And I, too, am a part of that "nature." That's why I worry when I eat too much, worry when I take on too much work, worry when I think about the meaning of life even though no one asks me to. And then I get sick. How unbalanced it is. How things never go as I want them to.

But that's why I think life is about constantly thinking about whether someday I'll find a good way of thinking, whether things will get even a little easier.

In fact, in Buddhism, they say that in this secular world, we will never truly be freed from earthly desires. If that's the case, then the reality is that we will be "tormented by all kinds of desires," and I think it's important to understand that such uncontrollable and unreasonable things are normal for humans, who are simply a part of nature.

When I think about it like that, I think I can forgive my own shortcomings, failures, and especially my tendency to succumb to my appetite (lol). Of course, as my doctor said, it's important to understand that and then learn how to control it, and that's a lifelong challenge.

But don't you think that the world is becoming more and more people who demand more integrity than necessary? I think the number of people who can't tolerate even a single failure or even a single setback has increased. I think that's what society is becoming. I don't think such pure people can survive this unreasonable "nature".

I say this to myself as a warning.

The Japanese hide themselves

Home-squeezed mandarin juice

Ehime Prefecture is famous in Japan for its mandarin oranges. When I go back to Osaka, I used to buy mandarin oranges. I've been busy lately and haven't been able to buy any.

When I buy mandarin oranges and come back, my second daughter enjoys eating them, but children get tired of them quickly. If they are dried properly, they won't rot. However, they will shrivel up. Watching them, I squeezed them all at once at home. They were small mandarins, so I don't know how many I squeezed. Anyway, I squeezed a lot.

When I made juice, my daughters drank it in no time. Even though it's hard to squeeze...

Last week, my wife's parents gave me a lot of Iyokan oranges, so I also went back to Osaka and peeled them all. I left only the fruit. Then they ate them after all.

That's why I'm in charge of mandarin orange processing in the winter.

When I was a lecturer for OJT at my previous job, I thought about how to get them to listen to me as effectively as possible. The person I was talking to was a newly hired employee. I thought that if a senior who I just joined the company and don't know well told me complicated stories, I wouldn't be able to understand them at all. That's because it's the same as memorizing a string of characters by rote.

I originally majored in psychology at university, so I learned about human memory. It's hard to remember things that don't have a memory trigger, like a string of characters. On the other hand, things that you remember as a story or an episode are easier to remember.

So I thought, I'd introduce myself as an interesting and eccentric senior and let them get to know me. I thought that by doing that, they would at least be interested in me as a lecturer. That series of steps was the strategy of turning it into an episode.

When I actually tried it, I felt that it was effective. The contents of the training should be able to be studied again when necessary. In fact, if the memory of "there was this kind of training" is planted in the mind, when necessary, you will think, "I'll look at the materials from that training." But who remembers a training that was just monotonous and sleepy?

Even so, the criticism against me was quite strong. I was told that I was using the training for my own purposes and promoting myself. If my goal was to promote myself, I would exaggerate how amazing I am... I was saved by the fact that some of my superiors in different departments understood me.

Japanese people hide their true selves. For Japanese people, the organization comes before the self, and there are people whose egos are fused with the organization, so I think that someone who introduces themselves as "this kind of person I am" must have been strange. Humans dislike strange and unusual things, and sometimes attack out of anxiety, so I thought it must be something like that.

But... I wonder what kind of life people who have no self to talk about have lived. I can't help but wonder about that. What do you think? This blog is written especially for people overseas, so what do you think about this characteristic of Japanese people from overseas?

不惑・知命・耳順:no delusions・known the mandate of Heaven・Being able to listen without rebelling

Japanese sweets from my favorite store

The other day, there was a misunderstanding at work. It was the first time I've had a crisis at my current workplace, and how I would overcome it was like a test for me.

In the past, I would endure things and end up exploding or getting sick, so I thought it was important to assert what I wanted to say early on. So that day, I finished work early and went home. I sent my opinion to the relevant people by message and went to bed early. I know this because I've been recuperating for a long time, but whether the problem is physical or mental, the most important and effective treatment is to sleep. At times like that, even if you think deeply and get depressed, it won't solve the problem.

Among them, there are words that I hit my boss with. It is a word from Confucius' "Analects" and is famous in Japan. Many people take it as a life lesson. I told my boss, "Isn't 60 the age when you become able to listen to others without rebellion = the age when you should aim to be 「耳順=Jijyun」?" I said this to mean that I wanted him to listen to me calmly.

When talking about others, I think that you should look back at yourself. I thought about whether I had achieved the goal of that age mentioned in the Analects.

At 40, "no longer confused = 「不惑=Fuwaku」." However, many people in their 40s say that it is impossible to be free from confusion. I thought about this from what I thought during the Shikoku Pilgrimage and from talking to my doctor. I think the essence of no more confused is, "At 40, I don't want to rejuvenate my life, go back and start over. I can make that decision." In your 30s, you still have some youth left. But at 40, you no longer act like a child. You don't want to go back to your youth. I think that your personality is not something you search for from scratch, but something you can fix based on who you are now. I think that is what no more confused means.

My next challenge is to "know the command given by heaven = 「知命=Chimei」" at 50. I think I can clear this quite easily. That's largely due to the Shikoku Pilgrimage, but I think I've come to be able to surrender to fate rather than thinking that I'm who I am. I'm an average Japanese person, so I'm not saying that I should believe in the existence of gods or Buddhas (lol). However, I think that if I can believe that someone is guiding me in the right direction, no matter who it is, I can feel a little more at ease. It may simply be the law of nature.

By the way, I said what I wanted to say, went to bed quickly, and went to work the next day without saying anything, but I think I was able to land pretty well. After all, there are some things that humans can't understand unless they are communicated, and some things can't be resolved without time. And you can't recover without sleep. Everyday life is a training for being a human being.

I always include photos when I write articles, but I've only taken photos of food (^^;) I see food every day, but I think that I miss a lot of scenery and other things if I don't pay attention to them. That just means that I'm living a busy and fulfilling life. But maybe I could calm down a little more...

The Japanese sweets in the photo are from a confectionery shop that also made sweets for our wedding, and we've been going there for over 10 years. The name and location of the shop are a secret. I'm sure you can easily find out if you look it up. But it's a shop I want to keep secret (^^)

Why I grow vegetables

Garlic planted in a planter

I was on a business trip last week. The results were excellent, so I've been busy since the beginning of this week.

I grow vegetables. In Osaka, we didn't have a garden, so I grew them in a planter. Even now, the company housing in Ehime Prefecture only has a balcony, so I grow them in a planter. This year, I've been busy with job changes, so I've only planted things that are easy to grow. A little bit of garlic and rakkyo. Both have a long growing period, but I can leave them alone to a certain extent, so I think they're not that difficult to grow.

I also planted some small potatoes that I had been storing indoors since last spring. Even though they were small, they sprouted a lot indoors after a year. If you plant them in soil, they will take root and grow even more. I'm thinking of planting them in a pot, and once the roots have taken hold, I'll grow them in bags.

I think I started growing vegetables about four years ago. At first, I started as a hobby that I could enjoy with my daughters. Then I thought, "I want to be someone who can make my own food."

People who live in cities have to buy food from producers in regional cities. If a disaster or war occurs in a city, they will immediately run out of food. People in cities may be doing big jobs and handling big money, but if they lose the foundation of the city, they will not be able to grow their own food. I thought that this is a very weak thing for humans to do.

It was fun to make vegetables, and now I have learned various cultivation knowledge. Whether it's in a planter or a bag, as long as there is soil and you take care of them, the vegetables will grow. You can learn that even if they are eaten by pests, that is natural. And you will learn how to protect your vegetables from pests.

Since I changed jobs, I have been busy and have not been able to grow as much as before, but I still continue to grow them little by little. The garlic that grows despite the cold looks very strong. It encourages me to work hard too.

My Work

Snow-capped mountains as seen from my workplace

Whether it's a blog or SNS, there are only a limited number of ways to introduce yourself. Especially in terms of the number of characters. However, my current situation is a little complicated, so I'd like to summarize it here.

I was a local government employee until last November. I started as a welfare professional, but in order to become a senior public assistance officer (inspection instructor), I was required to hold a certain rank at the workplace, so I became a chief clerk. However, after becoming a chief clerk, I was also involved in a lot of general administrative work. That in itself was a very good experience.

I was originally a person who easily became absorbed in things, so I devoted myself too much to my work, which caused my body to become abnormal and I became depressed. After returning to work, I was tormented by interpersonal relationships. Unfortunately, I had foreseen this interpersonal entanglement to some extent, so I expressed my concerns to my superiors, but things proceeded without any particular consideration, and as a result, my concerns became a reality. And unfortunately, I was the target of those concerns.

When people get together, things can go wrong in more than a few ways, but I had been talking with my workplace about returning to work alongside my treatment, and unfortunately, I was let down by the organization, which took a backward step that even my lawyer, who had supported me, could have given up on. I had felt this since I was working, but even if the facts are inconvenient, the only way to improve the problem is to correctly understand and deal with them, but the organization I was in continued to cover up the problem. This was one of the reasons why I decided to leave, but since mid-level employees were quitting one after another, I thought it was time for me to quit.

I don't care about the organization I left at this point, so I'll leave it here.

I think I've lived my life relatively according to the advice of the adults around me. I became a civil servant because my mentor recommended it. However, while I was worrying, I walked the pilgrimage route while undergoing treatment, and it occurred to me. I hadn't done what I really wanted to do in life. So I wanted to live the other half of my life the way I wanted to. Because it's my life.

I have a dream. To open a lodging facility for pilgrims on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. I thought about various ways. I thought about being completely self-employed, but when I took my plan to a company run by the family of my wife's friend, I thought there would be a synergistic effect with their business, so I joined the company with the intention of opening a guesthouse there someday.

This is where I work.

Ichiyanagi Konnyaku Shop - Shikokuchuo City, Ehime Prefecture

I spend weekdays in Ehime Prefecture. I live in the company dormitory and go to work. My current job is manufacturing and sales. Originally, the emphasis was on manufacturing, but since the company originally had few administrative staff, I listened to the request to do sales, so now I have more sales work.

Unless it's a public holiday, I go back to my home in Osaka on Friday night. Then I spend the weekend with my family and come back to Ehime on Sunday night. That's the kind of strange life I lead.

My current job is connected to my dream, and unlike my previous job, coming up with various plans and taking action while chasing the company's profits suits my personality very well. So I'm having a lot of fun now. Everyone wonders why I quit my job as a civil servant, but it's definitely more fun to be healthy and able to work positively than to be unhealthy and unable to work properly. And I didn't want to show my daughters such an unhealthy state.

I'm learning English because in the not-too-distant future, I'll open a pilgrim's lodge. It is said that 40% of the pilgrims on the Shikoku Pilgrimage are foreign. So it's better to be able to speak English. Still, I don't like studying, so I'm studying slowly and steadily, looking at the generated text of the automatic translation through chat and correcting it to suit the nuance.

My situation is complicated, so if I write it down here, I think it will be easier for people to understand my situation if they see it here.

The photo shows the mountain that can be seen from my company. It is in the Ishizuchi mountain range and is quite high in altitude. In Osaka, I lived without being able to see either the mountains or the sea, so I like living in this city where I can see both clearly.
